Focus on Low Fell, Gateshead

Local news from Low Fell Councillors Ron Beadle, Susan Craig & Frank Hindle

Do you want a bus shelter here?

If so, don't forget to sign the petition for a new bus shelter,

The latest proposals:

The Council has reviewed the existing parking restrictions on the west side of Durham Road between Belle Vue Bank and Cross Keys Lane and the following changes are proposed.

There is a plan of the proposals on the transport consultation page on the council website

The Council is wanting comments on the schemes by Friday 21th October 2011.

What Frank, Ron & Susan say:

Frank, Susan and Ron think the new proposals make a lot of sense - they allow the bus stop and shelter to be together, give room for buses and creare a better sized place for taxis at night, but should stop them using too much space. We know that there are some problems with the disabled parking bays being close to one of the raised flowerbeds, but we think that will bersdt bne solved by changing the flower bed - which need to be improved in any case.

We need to see if any other issues are raised duiing the consultation - more consultation at an earlier stage might have prevented the confusion of recent months.

We then want to see working taking place to put the bus stop and shelter together in a suitable spot as quickly as possible. Please sign the petition to help us persuade everyone involved at Gateshead Council that this really does need doing quickly.

There used to be a bus shelter for the bus stop beside the war memorial on Durham Road.

But earlier this year the council decided to move the bus stop away from the traffic lights, to make it easier and safer for buses to pull away - but didn't check where the shelter could go!

For months now, bus passengers waiting here haven't had any shelter.

This simply isn't good enough. Frank Hindle, Ron Beadle and Susan Craig say it is time for ACTION to sort this out.

Frank Hindle, Ron Beadle & Susan Craig have had repeated discussions with the engineers and planners about the need for the shelter and also about parking and the taxi rank.

At last there is what seems to be a sensible plan, with the bus stop and shelter to be outside Bar Mondo. The council is consulting on the proposals (see the sidebar on the right for more information) but we need this consultation to be quickly followed by action.

Frank Hindle said "It is important that all the council departments realise that the bus shelter is needed urgently. We were told in June that the council had a shelter in stock, but it has taken months for officials to agree where it can go.

"Having no shelter in the summer was bad enough, having no shelter in winter will be terrible. Now we need to make sure the council finally takes action. If you or your family use this bus shelter, please sign the petition below."

Petition for a new bus shelter on Durham Road, Low Fell:

To Gateshead Council:

We are concerned that there has been no bus shelter in the shopping area on Durham Road for several months and urge the council to make sure that a replacement shelter for bus passengers is installed as soon as possible and before winter starts.
